From then till now ..

On approaching forty and three stone overweight in July07, rather than buying new suits with extra large trousers, i spent the money on joining a gym near work & getting a personal trainer.

In Oct07 I was running with Brentwood's Thift Green Trotters & in Oct08 ran the Dublin Marathon. Soon after I joined up with Billericay Striders & in Apr10 ran the London Marathon.

Both marathons became hell at 20 miles and left me distinctly disappointed after following a 'marathon training plan' that indicated that I could do better ...

I bought a book:
>> Phil Maffetone: The Maffetone Method: The Holistic, Low-Stress, No-Pain Way to Exceptional Fitness
and read this on-line article
>> Hadd: http://www.counterpartcoaching.com/hadd.pdf

My goal is now to follow these to a great sub four hour October marathon. This means running with Heart Rate Monitor at controlled low heart rate (140 bpm) for up to 50 miles per week for the next three months... let's see how it goes
